Fees
Apprentices with outstanding fees are ineligible to attend further courses and enrolment applications will not be processed.
Should your employer agree to pay your fees it is essential they complete and return a 'Payment of Fees' form prior to commencement of your course.
Trainees and apprentices will be supplied with materials essential to achieving module outcomes/competencies. Support materials which aid and assist learning are also available for purchase. Should an apprentice/trainee choose not to purchase these support materials, he/she should indicate this in response to his/her Training Notice.
General Rules
- As per the provisions of the Training and Employment Act 2000, attendance at a course of instruction is mandatory as it forms part of your Training Contract.
- As per the provisions of the Training and Employment Act 2000, attendance at a course of instruction is regarded as ordinary time worked. This should be remembered when considering behaviour in class and on any Brisbane North Institute of TAFE campus.
When you are attending classes at Brisbane North Institute of TAFE you must be on time for classes or when coming back from approved breaks (for example, lunch breaks). - Approval for apprentices to leave classes early can not be granted except at times of legitimate illness/emergencies. If you have to leave classes due to illness, prior to your departure you must inform a member of the teaching staff and you must complete a 'Leave of Absence' form. Your employer will be informed of this absence.
- If you are absent from classes, on your return to the Institute you must complete a 'Leave of Absence' form, which is available from your teachers or Program Delivery Administration. The reasons for your absence must be fully explained on this form. The original copy of the form is sent to your employer for his/her records and adjustment of wages payable to you.
Please note that absences of two (2) or more days require a medical certificate which is to be attached to the competed 'Leave of Absence' form.
You are required to stay on campus during morning and afternoon breaks, but may leave the Institute grounds at lunch time provided you return on time for the start of afternoon classes.
- Apprentices/trainees are not permitted to attend classes following the consumption of alcohol nor are they permitted to bring alcohol on to any Brisbane North Institute of TAFE campus.
- As with other students, apprentices will not be able to attend classes until they are enrolled.
Fines
As per the provisions of Delegation 19 of the Training and Employment Act 2000, the Institute Director has the authority to impose fines, reprimand and suspend apprentices/trainees from classes where the:
- Apprentice/trainee fails to carry out a reasonable and lawful instruction, that is consistent with their obligation under the contract.
- Apprentice or trainee is absent from training required under their training plan apprentice or trainee fails to participate in necessary training provided by the Supervising Registered Training Organisation.
- Serious misconduct.
The maximum fine per occasion which can be imposed is 4 penalty units.
The Institute Director has the authority to impose a suspension from classes for a maximum of three (3) days. Where it is felt that a longer period of suspension is warranted the Chair of the Training Recognition Council is consulted. A suspension upheld by the Institute and/or the Chair of the Training Recognition Council is on the basis of no pay for the period of the suspension.
The following action is taken at the time of a suspension:
- your employer is notified
- Training Queensland is notified.
Minimum Acceptable Standard of Dress
Foot Protection
All safety shoes must conform to Australian Standard Approval for the Code AS2210. All safety footwear must incorporate protective steel toecaps complying with the relevant requirements of this standard. Protective footwear must have covered uppers and non-slip soles for the working environment. You are responsible for providing this protection.
Eye Protection
Eye protection in the form of safety spectacles or safety clip-ons (if you wear non safety prescription spectacles) is to be provided by yourself. It must carry the Australian Standards approval for the Code AS1337 'Industrial Eye Protection'. If there is any doubt you will be required to obtain a pair that do comply with the Code.
If wearing prescription spectacles, safety clip-ons must be worn, unless the lenses are industrially hardened or made of CR39 Clear. Your optometrist can advise you on this matter. However if there is any doubt you will be required to obtain and wear a pair of safety clip-ons.
Ear Protection
You must ensure Ear Protection carries the Australian Standard Approval AS1270 Hearing Protectors. You are responsible for providing this protection.
Hair Protection
Hair protection must be worn when working around moving machinery and/or when a designated area is in operation. The hair protection should be in the form of a peak cap especially designed for industrial use. It should also come with a snood capable of fully containing the hair. A cap of fire resistant material shall be worn when working in welding areas. You are responsible for providing this protection.
Sun Screen Requirements
Sun screen must be used to provide protection for exposed skin during outdoor activities.
Jewellery and Watches
These items must be removed during practical work or whilst undertaking any activity which may result in injury as a result of jewellery/watch becoming caught or entangled.
Clothing
Clothing worn by persons who may come in contact with fire, heat and molten metal must be manufactured from a fire resistant material such as 100 percent cotton drill. Flannelette, synthetic fabrics and T-shirts with transfers are not permitted in workshops when oxy welding and cutting are being undertaken.
Please note that:
- Apprentices failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry to classes.
- Apprentices/trainees may require additional protective clothing/equipment specific to your trade. This is provided with your training notice.
Subsidies
Subsidies (if eligible) are available to assist you with your accommodation and travel expenses associated with attendance at off-the-job training.
Accommodation
Brisbane North Institute of TAFE does not arrange accommodation for apprentices/trainees who must live away from home to attend off-the-job training.
