Where?
Mentoring or more precisely communication for mentoring can occur any place you decide. Here are some suggestions:
Face to-face
-
On the mentee's campus - helps removes work distractions
-
At the mentor's workplace - helps mentee get realistic feel of work
-
At a neutral site - removes most distractions, and may help each other relax more
Telementoring via
-
Telephone - often very convenient. May lose visual clues, and end up expensive.
-
email - very convenient and fast. May lose visual and verbal clues. (Refer to Harrington 1999)
-
Online Chat - can be a lot of fun. May lose visual and verbal clues. Requires setting up and is technology-dependent.
-
Online Discussion - excellent if both busy and can't coordinate time. Not necessarily good for quick answers, or if you want a good chat.
-
Computer Conferencing - if technology exists and is working, can use for sharing pictures, information and knowledge, and talking live.
