The Following list of information literacy modules currently being offered are delivered on-campus by learning hub staff:

Introduction to the learning hub and information sources
Students will be introduced to using the learning hub and finding information. The session includes:
- presentation of services available
- tour of the facilities
- demonstration of use of equipment and catalogue
- logging on to the network and using the computers
- an exercise to consolidate knowledge.
Time: 40-60 minutes.
Web searching
All Brisbane North Institute of TAFE students have access to the Internet at every campus learning hub. Yet finding information on the web can be a frustrating and time-wasting business. This session can help you find better information more quickly. It covers:
- using different types of web search tools
- devising search strategies
- specialised information pages.
A presentation and consolidation activities are included.
Time: 40-60 minutes
Searching the Catalogue
The catalogue or OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) is simple to use - but can be a very powerful information finding tool with a few advanced techniques and use of advanced functions. This session covers:
- optimising the easy search
- effective use of the advanced search
- use of other functions.
It is most effective when students have an assessment or assignment to focus their searching on.
Time: 20-30 minutes
Online database search strategies
This session includes instruction in the use of online and CD-ROM databases, including:
- identifying key topic concepts
- forming search strategies
- evaluating search results.
It is most effective when students have an assessment or assignment to focus their searching on.
Time: 30-40 minutes
Every student can access and send email via the Internet on the PCs in the learning hubs. This practical session helps students to start using email. It may cover:
- finding a free web-based email service
- opening up an account
- sending, replying to, and forwarding mail
- sending attachments
- security and anti-spam techniques.
Time: 40-60 minutes
Customised information skills training
The learning hub staff can provide tailored information skills training for your needs e.g.
- accessing the Brisbane North Institute of TAFE student network
- introduction to MyTAFE
- accessing Australian standards
- using specific online resources such as Australian Standards Online, InfoTrac, ANZRC and other databases available through the Learning Hub in MyTAFE
- copyright
- referencing and constructing bibliographies.
