What is email?

Email or electronic mail is quickly becoming an indispensable communication tool (like the telephone, answering machine and fax). It allows you to send electronic messages (and files) via the Internet to one or more people. The electronic messages are sent from your email address to the email address of the other computer user or users.

How do I get an email address?

Email addresses for personal use usually come as part of the package of services you rent when you access the Internet via an Internet Service Provider. It is also available to you free from a number of companies on the Internet such as the ones listed below. Web-based services do not require separate email software.

How do I use the free Web-based email?

  1. Select one of the Web-based email services listed below.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Why is it free?

The companies offering free web-based software generally pay for the service by the advertising that appears on their homepage.

Remember to read the "fine print"

Make sure you read any 'Acceptable Use Policies', 'Conditions of Use', 'Access Agreements' or 'Information Agreements'. Also make sure there are instructions on how to remove your name and email address from the service.
