Entry requirements

Brisbane North Institute of TAFE considers several factors when assessing your application to enter a Certificate or Diploma course. Two important factors are your academic history and proficiency in English.
Academic Requirements
Proficiency in English
Academic Requirements
Academic requirements vary depending on the course you wish to enter. Minimum requirements relating to academic history are listed in our course information sheets - for example:
- Year 10 or equivalent (for Certificate courses)
- Year 12 or equivalent (for Diploma courses).
Some courses may have further requirements such as:
- proficiency in specific subjects - for example, science, art or mathematics
- Mature-age entry is usually offered as an alternative to Years 10 or 12 levels of study. For mature-age entry, you must be at least 21 years of age and have relevant work experience.
Your prior work or life experiences may qualify you to apply for special entry or credit. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). To apply for RPL, you must provide evidence of your experience so that Brisbane North Institute of TAFE can determine whether it matches the outcomes of the course you wish to enter. If you believe that you are eligible for special entry or credit under RPL, you should contact the International Student Services Officer.
Proficiency in English
Brisbane North Institute of TAFE also requires proficiency in the English language before you can begin formal studies. This is determined by one of the following prerequisites:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - score of 5.5 with no individual score less than 5.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - score of 530; International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) - minimum individual score of 2+.
- TAFE Queensland Certificate IV in English.
- Australian Year 12 English (or equivalent) - Sound Achievement rating.
- Cambridge First Certificate of English - A or B grades.
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English; successful completion of an acceptable formal course where the medium of instruction was English. This does not include English Language Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS).
- Successful completion of TAFE Queensland Certificate III in Communication and Business Skills for International Students. This is offered as a bridging course.
- Test results are regarded as valid for 12 months only.
If you have concerns about your academic record and its effect on entry into your preferred course, please contact the International Student Officer or one of our representatives in your home country.
