Crest Point practice firm

Crest Point International Resort Hotel - Brisbane North Institute of TAFE

Crest Point International Resort Hotel is a practice firm hosted by Brisbane North Institute of TAFE that provides students with real business experience whilst undertaking a Diploma of Business (Administration).

Brisbane North Institute of TAFE is the only training organisation in Queensland that is delivering the Diploma of Business (Administration) in a practice firm learning environment. The business experience gained is recognised as equivalent to work experience and the qualification may be used as credit towards a business degree.

What is a practice firm?

A practice firm is a simulated business that is set up and operated solely by students who are assisted by a teacher and a business partner. It also provides an opportunity for students to conduct business with other practice firms, nationally and internationally.

There are approximately 170 practice firms nationwide and 3500 throughout the international business world. Everyday more and more practice firms are being setup in TAFE colleges, secondary schools and universities in order to provide innovative hands-on learning opportunities for students.

How does Crest Point International operate?

Essentially, the Crest Point International Resort Hotel practice firm is:

The practice firm is set up with the appropriate departments needed to conduct the business such as administration, sales, marketing, public relations, finance, human resources and purchasing.

Subjects are integrated into the day-to-day business activities that assist the student's transition into the workplace. Assessment is based on the business activities that the students carry out in their departments.

Benefits for you

Studying in a practice firm environment allows students to develop a 'business mindset'. Benefits for students include hands-on experience and skills that relate to the workplace including; communication, decision making, negotiation, customer service as well as many business and social protocols.

Students enter the workplace with skills and training necessary to complete the job efficiently and with confidence. The employer also benefits from this special training by saving time and money providing workplace training to upgrade your business skills, which would not be addressed in a conventional classroom environment.

Student testimonials

Not knowing what to do after leaving High School was one of the biggest problems I had. I was unsure if I wanted to continue studying, or to get a job. I knew that if I wanted to get an Administration Job I had to have some sort of a qualification, so when I heard about the practice firm I thought that it would be a good opportunity for me extend my knowledge, and experience new things.

I discovered many things that I would not have learnt in a normal class room environment. The experience that I gained from the practice firm was different and interesting. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in administration.
Maria Tautasi

Learning in a practice firm environment was probably the best option for me to take when I decided to resume study ten years after finishing school. Not only did I learn everything required to gain my qualification, but I was working in an office environment that gave me the basic skills I needed to re-enter the workforce.

It taught me how to work effectively in a team, leadership, time management and day to day office skills that I would not have learned within a 'normal' classroom environment. I would recommend this type of learning to anyone interested in business administration.
