Recognition of skills and experience

At BNIT we recognise that you may have already obtained skills and knowledge through previous work/life experience or prior study.
There are a number of ways your existing skills, knowledge and previous study can be recognised at BNIT.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning also referred to as Skills Recognition Assessment or RPL is a formal assessment process that recognises a person's current skills and experience regardless of where and when the learning occurred.
Is the Skills Recognition Assessment (RPL) pathway for me?
If you can answer yes to any of the following questions it could be for you:
- Would you like your skills and experience to contribute towards a qualification?
- Do you have paid or unpaid work experience relevant to the qualification you want?
- Do you have similar skills and knowledge to colleagues with qualifications?
- Do you work in an industry that now requires you to have a particular skill set or qualification?
- Do you have a qualification in another field that could be recognized in your current role?
Some of the benefits of undertaking a Skills Recognition Assessment (RPL) include:
- reduction in study time and costs
- increased career options or job promotions
- possible pathways to further study
- meet current industry requirements or licensing.
The Skills Recognition Assessment (RPL) process allows a teacher or assessor to consider and evaluate your skills and abilities against the learning outcomes in a unit of competency that you are seeking recognition for. The assessment process will ensure that your skills and knowledge meet industry standards. An assessor will need to determine that you:
- can demonstrate the skills required
- can apply the knowledge and skills specified to work situations
- that your knowledge and skills are current
- that your skills can be verified by a relevant industry colleague.
What evidence do I need to supply?
There is no one way approach to gathering evidence. Some examples of applicable evidence may include:
- your current resume
- records of professional development or training
- references and testimonials
- position descriptions
- records of previous studies
- copies of previous qualifications.
It is important to note that having little or no documentary evidence of your previous experience does not necessarily preclude you from receiving recognition (RPL).
How much does RPL cost?
Although you may not be required to complete any classroom activities, there are still costs involved with RPL. The cost will vary between qualifications and depend upon which electives are included in your qualification. In most cases RPL costs less than formal training.
