Professional year programs
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) have recently introduced a Professional Year program. This is one of the pathways available to onshore overseas students to gain additional points for migration to Australia to work in the information technology industry and occupations in high demand such as accounting.

Skilled Migration Internship Program - Accounting (SMIPA)
The Skilled Migration Internship Program - Accounting (SMIPA) The three accounting professional bodies, CPA Australia, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and The National Institute of Accountants have developed this program to be delivered by approved educational Providers.
Brisbane North Institute of TAFE has been approved by the three accounting professional bodies to deliver this program.
The first Program will start 9 March 2009, with second program starting 6 July 2009
To be eligible you must be the holder of a Skilled Graduate (Temporary) visa Subclass 485.
The Program
The program is aimed at improving participants' professional English language proficiency and cultural communications skills relevant to the Australian business context. Participants will also benefit from an understanding of the job market - specifically the accounting profession. A work experience/internship in an accounting role is included and will provide participants with an integrated and practical application of the skills already taught.
As well as the knowledge and skills to assist them with employment a accounting professional in Australia, and the opportunity to gain experience in an Australian workplace through a structured internship. Download the latest professional year program brochure [

Brisbane North Institute of TAFE (BNIT) is the first provider in Queensland to offer the Professional Year Program in partnership with Australian Computer Society (ACS) and Australian Internships.
To be eligible you must be the holder of a Skilled Graduate (Temporary) visa Subclass 485.
The Program
The program will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to assist them with employment in the ICT industry in Australia, as well as the opportunity to gain experience in an Australian workplace through a structured internship. Download the latest professional year program brochure [

There are four components to the program.
- Australian Workplace Culture - face to face workshop.
- Business and Professional Communications - face to face workshop.
- Professional Element (delivered by Australian Computer Society delivered on-line as well as attendance at ACS networking events.
- 16 week Professional Internship.
A one day boot camp will be held at the opening and closing days of the program. This will provide participants with the opportunity to network with industry representatives.
