Professional year programs

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) have recently introduced a Professional Year program. This is one of the pathways available to onshore overseas students to gain additional points for migration to Australia to work in the information technology industry and occupations in high demand such as accounting.

Skilled Migration Internship Program - Accounting (SMIPA)

The Skilled Migration Internship Program - Accounting (SMIPA) The three accounting professional bodies, CPA Australia, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and The National Institute of Accountants have developed this program to be delivered by approved educational Providers.

Brisbane North Institute of TAFE has been approved by the three accounting professional bodies to deliver this program.

The program dates for 2010 are:

To be eligible you must be the holder of a Skilled Graduate (Temporary) visa Subclass 485.

The Program

The program is aimed at improving participants' professional English language proficiency and cultural communications skills relevant to the Australian business context. Participants will also benefit from an understanding of the job market - specifically the accounting profession. A work experience/internship in an accounting role is included and will provide participants with an integrated and practical application of the skills already taught.

As well as the knowledge and skills to assist them with employment a accounting professional in Australia, and the opportunity to gain experience in an Australian workplace through a structured internship. Download the latest professional year program brochure [ PDF 632 kB].

Please read carefully the following refund policy:

Before the course starts:
Cancellations for this program will be accepted five (5) or more days before the start date.  A full refund of fees charged for the program, less an administration fee of $10, will be made.

After the course has commenced:
Cancellations received less than five (5) days before the start date, on the day, or after course commencement will not be eligible for a refund of any fees and charges paid by/for the student, and any remaining payments due in respect of the enrolment must be paid to the Institute (unless a contract between the parties states otherwise).

Participants may make a written appeal to the Institute Director, for a refund based on special circumstances, including severe illness or injury, accompanied by a Medical Certificate.

Please also note that if you have booked to re-sit an IELTS and it is after the program has started you will not be eligible for a refund should you receive a 7.0 in all bands.

Additional Information

The Professional Year is a 44 week program.

While your Skilled Graduate (Temporary) visa Subclass 485 is current, you will have the right to work in Australia. Please check the DIAC website for more information.
